Complete Guide to Matcha and How to Prepare It

Article Summary

Matcha, the powdered green tea that has conquered the world, isn't just a drink; it's an experience. Whether you're a novice or an expert, this guide will help you navigate the world of matcha, from its origins to the perfect preparation. Get ready to dive into this green and flavorful universe!

    Matcha basics: origins and benefits

Before diving into preparation, it's essential to understand what matcha truly is. Originating from Japan, this tea is shade-grown, which gives it a vibrant color and unique flavor. But don't be fooled by its color; matcha is much more than just a pretty green.

History and tradition of Japanese matcha tea

Matcha has a rich history dating back several centuries. Introduced to Japan by Buddhist monks in the 12th century, it was initially used in tea ceremonies. The tea ceremony, or "chanoyu," is an art in itself, where every gesture is imbued with meaning. Imagine preparing matcha with the same attention as a Michelin-starred chef!

Over the years, matcha has evolved, but it remains deeply rooted in Japanese culture. Today, it is celebrated not only for its taste but also for its soothing and energizing properties. Who would have thought that a simple tea could be both a stimulant and a relaxant?

In addition to its role in ceremonies, matcha has also found its place in modern cuisine. Chefs worldwide incorporate it into desserts, smoothies, and even savory dishes, adding a touch of originality and sophistication. This versatility makes matcha a prized ingredient that continues to inspire gastronomes and healthy eating enthusiasts.

    Nutritional properties and health effects

Matcha is a true concentrate of benefits. Rich in antioxidants, it helps fight free radicals and boost the immune system. Plus, it contains L-theanine, an amino acid that promotes relaxation without causing drowsiness. Basically, it's like getting a little boost without the side effects of coffee!

But that's not all! Matcha can also improve concentration and memory. So, if you have an exam to prepare for or an important project, a cup of matcha might just be your best ally. Who would have thought that tea could be as effective as a yoga session?

Furthermore, studies suggest that regular consumption of matcha could contribute to weight management. By stimulating metabolism, it helps the body burn fat more efficiently. It's therefore an ideal drink for those looking to maintain a healthy lifestyle while indulging themselves. By integrating matcha into your daily routine, you're not just enjoying a delicious drink; you're also investing in your long-term well-being.

    Choosing and storing your matcha

Now that you're convinced of matcha's benefits, it's time to move on to the next step: choosing the right matcha and storing it correctly. Because poor-quality matcha is like a cake without sugar – it's not worth it!

Recognizing quality matcha: grades and characteristics

Matcha comes in several grades, ranging from ceremonial matcha, the best of the best, to culinary matcha, perfect for your recipes. For quality matcha, look for a vibrant, brilliant green color reminiscent of spring nature. If your matcha looks like mud, walk away!

At Maïdo Matcha, we have two exceptional ceremonial grade matchas: Mei-san and Daichi-san. Both of these matchas can be enjoyed in the simplest way: as usucha and koicha. In other words: by mixing them only with water (but at the right temperature!). If you're curious, here are the specifics of these two matchas:

    • Mei-san: the smoothest ceremonial matcha in our range, ideal as a traditional tea or in a latte for a moment of serenity and indulgence.
    • Daichi-san: the perfect ceremonial matcha for matcha regulars. Daichi-san offers a rich, intense taste with a lovely mouthfeel. The umami is deep, balanced by a moderate, subtle, and elegant bitterness.

But that's not all... At Maïdo, we also have an everyday matcha, one with character that you can drink as a latte or use in your cooking. This is Kaori-san, a more accessible matcha that blends perfectly with milk without losing its flavor.

In addition to color, texture is also important. Good matcha should be finely ground, almost like silk powder. Ours is traditionally stone-ground to maintain this unique fineness.

    Storage techniques to preserve freshness

Once you've found the perfect matcha, it's crucial to store it correctly. Matcha is sensitive to light, humidity, and air. To keep it fresh, store it in an airtight container, away from direct light. Our tins are perfect for this! We also add a small plastic seal on top, allowing the tin to be properly closed.

Note that if it's not humid or very hot where you live, you don't need to put it in the fridge. That would actually be counterproductive! However, if you live in a very humid and hot place, then it can indeed be an alternative. The best advice: keep your matcha in a cool, dry place, and it will reward you with a delicious cup whenever you fancy one.

Furthermore, it's worth noting that matcha can also be affected by surrounding odors. For this reason, avoid storing it near spices or strongly scented foods. Quality matcha should retain its delicate aroma and pure flavor, which is essential to fully appreciate its benefits. If you've opened your matcha, we recommend consuming it within 3 months to avoid losing its benefits and experiencing a potential flavor change. Nevertheless, don't panic: if you have matcha that's been open for more than three months, you can still consume it, even if the color isn't as vibrant as it was initially.

Finally, for matcha enthusiasts, it may be wise to purchase smaller quantities and consume them quickly. This ensures that you always enjoy fresh and flavorful matcha. That's why we also offer three sizes at Maïdo Matcha: 30g, 60g, and 100g! By integrating matcha into your daily routine, whether in a latte, a smoothie, or even in baking, you'll discover new ways to savor this precious powder while preserving its exceptional qualities.

    Traditional matcha preparation

Now that you have your quality matcha and know how to store it, it's time to move on to preparation. Get ready to become a matcha master!

Essential utensils: chawan, chasen, and chashaku

To prepare traditional matcha, a few utensils are essential. The chawan, or tea bowl, is the central element. It should be wide enough to allow for proper whisking. Next, you'll need a chasen, a bamboo whisk that creates a light and airy foam. Finally, the chashaku, a bamboo scoop, is used to measure the matcha powder. With these three utensils, you're ready to impress your friends!

If you don't have these utensils yet, don't panic! You can always improvise with what you have on hand. A regular bowl and a small electric whisk can do the trick, even if it's not as authentic and there's a higher risk of lumps. But after all, the important thing is to enjoy your matcha, regardless of the equipment!

Detailed steps for perfectly whisked matcha

Here are the steps to prepare matcha worthy of the grandest ceremonies:

    1. First, start by sifting about 1 to 2 bamboo scoops of matcha into your bowl. This helps remove lumps and achieve a smooth texture.
    2. Next, add about 70 to 100 ml of hot water, but be careful, not boiling! Water at around 75-80°C (167-176°F) is ideal.
    3. Now, the long-awaited moment: whisking! Take your chasen and begin whisking the matcha in an "M" motion, like Maïdo 😉. The goal is to create a beautiful foam on top. This may take a few tens of seconds (usually 30 seconds to 1 minute), but the result is worth it. Once you have a light and airy foam, your matcha is ready to be enjoyed!
    4. Optional: For a personal touch, feel free to add a little milk or almond/oat milk for a matcha latte. But be warned, this might deviate from tradition. However, who said you couldn't have a little fun with recipes? After all, matcha is meant to be enjoyed!

If you add milk, the taste of matcha will also be lighter, as will the bitterness. You'll need to adjust the amount according to your preference. For a latte, we recommend Daichi-san and Kaori-san, for a pronounced Umami. For beginners, Mei-san is perfect!

In addition to these steps, it's interesting to note that matcha is often associated with rituals in Japan. Preparing matcha is not only a matter of technique but also of mindfulness. Every movement, every gesture is performed with care and intention, allowing one to connect with the drink and the present moment. It's a true celebration of Japanese culture, where tea is considered a means of achieving serenity.

Furthermore, did you know that matcha is rich in antioxidants and nutrients? Indeed, by drinking matcha, you consume the entire leaf, which means you benefit from all its goodness. This makes it a drink that is not only delicious but also beneficial for health. Whether to improve your concentration or to give you an energy boost, matcha is a precious ally in your daily routine.
